Former Waratahs coach Jason Gilmore is under increasing pressure to keep his job at Harlequins with the English club issuing a statement in response to their string of poor performances.
After they were on the receiving end of a 66-21 hiding at the lands of Northampton, Gilmore conceded that if the results did not turn around, “it’s not going to be sustainable – that’s pretty obvious”.
Quins have lost seven of their past eight outings to be languishing in eighth spot at the halfway mark of the season, just above Gloucester and Newcastle in the relegation zone.
They have also been thrashed recently 40-14 by Bristol and 43-17 on the road against Sale Sharks while winning just two matches all season.
The club then put out a statement signed by CEO Laurie Dalrymple and chair David Morgan which said change was on the way.
“Performances and results in the men’s team are not at the level we expect at Harlequins and are not considered acceptable by anyone within the club.
“Everyone is working tirelessly and urgently to address this, and to deliver the necessary on pitch improvements.
“Whilst some elements of change will take a relatively short period of time to implement, others will take longer.
“It is critical that such change is carefully considered and will evidently deliver the performance levels we are committed to.
“The board, players, coaches and staff all share the disappointment felt by our supporters.
“Your support and continued patience during this challenging period for the club is recognised and greatly appreciated.”
Gilmore said there was plenty of hard work needed to get back on track.
“There’s no magic formula to it, we’ve just got to make sure we keep stepping forward and hopefully get some bodies back on the field because the injuries are magnifying things,” he said after the Northampton drubbing.
“You’re definitely going to lose confidence, there’s no hiding from that.
“We’re clear on what we want to go after.”
Gilmore, who was the Waratahs’ interim coach during the 2021 Super Rugby season following the sacking of Rob Penney, has also coached the Australian under 20s and been an assistant with the Queensland Reds.
