Cameron Green is confident a form reversal is ‘around the corner’ as the embattled all-rounder heads into the final Test of the Ashes series as the Australian team’s most under-pressure figure.
The 26-year old has long been seen as the great white hope of Australian cricket, but has endured a difficult summer, averaging just 18.67 with the bat and taking only three wickets at 52.67.
Speculation has begun to mount over his spot in the team, having batted in five different positions in his last seven Test innings – a streak that began at No.3 on Australia’s mid-year tour of the West Indies, and finished at No.8 in the second innings of their Boxing Day Test loss to England.
However, speaking to 7 News, Green said he is only one quality innings away from rediscovering his best touch.
“I feel like I’m hitting them pretty well in the game – that just hasn’t quite happened,” he told 7NEWS.
“That does happen, and hopefully there’s one’s around the corner.”
After five years and 36 Tests, Green’s batting average is 32.25 and bowling average 36.68 – less than ideal figures for an all-rounder, never mind from a young player with seemingly limitless potential when he debuted as a 21-year old off the back of a glut of runs in the Sheffield Shield.
However, injuries have plagued the Western Australian throughout his career, having been sidelined for nearly 12 months with back stress fractures from late 2024 and returning mid-year as a batter only; while he first lost his spot in the Test team during the 2023 Ashes series due to the re-emergence of Mitchell Marsh.
Speaking to Nine News, former Australian captain Mark Taylor remains confident in Green’s star potential, urging selectors to continue to invest.
“I’d play Cam in Sydney. I think Cam is our future,” Taylor said, attributing his inconsistent form to being shuffled around the batting order.
“When you’re someone like Cameron Green, who’s short of runs and trying to nail down a spot, that affects your confidence, and I think that’s what we’re seeing with Cam.
“He’s probably only an innings or two away from being a regular number five or six but sooner or later we’ve got to see that innings.”
Green is expected to retain his place in the team for the Sydney Test, which begins at the SCG on January 4, though experienced all-rounder Beau Webster, who was harshly dropped from the team before the Ashes series after featuring in the first seven Australian Tests of 2025, is a chance to be recalled.
Changes are likely to be made as Australia look to seal a 4-1 series win, with spinner Todd Murphy, who was left out at the MCG in favour of a four-man seam attack, set to play his first Test on home soil.
One of Jhye Richardson or Michael Neser, who played in Melbourne after replacing the injured Nathan Lyon and Pat Cummins, will likely make way.
