North Melbourne have cemented their standing as one of the greatest Australian football teams of all time, claiming back-to-back premierships and securing a second consecutive perfect season with a resounding 40-point grand final win over Brisbane.
Breaking the game open with a three goals to zero second quarter, the remarkable accurate Kangaroos’ first behind took until the final quarter to be recorded, with the Lions gallant but simply outclassed.
AFLW best and fairest winner Ash Riddell led the way with 39 disposals, with her premier challenger for best-afield honours Eilish Sheerin, who capped a spectacular first season in blue and white after being traded from Richmond in the off-season with 28 disposals, nine clearances and two goals.
Remarkably, the Roos headed into half time with a 22-point lead despite a staggering 11 fewer inside 50s than the Lions, with the league’s best defence, spearheaded by the AFLW’s first four-time premiership player Liby Birch, all but impenetrable.
For the Lions, the disappointment makes it five grand final defeats for coach Craig Starcevich – though as it has been for nearly the entire season, no team in women’s football history could have stopped the dominant Kangaroos.
Bella Dawes was titanic in defeat with 31 disposals, but there were few winners for the Lions, who for the second year in a row failed in their bid to become the first team to hold both AFL and AFLW premierships at the same time.
