Ange Postecoglou could be set for a dramatic return to England’s Premier League with Nottingham Forest sacking head coach Nuno Espirito Santo three games into the season.

The Athletic reported the decision comes after a breakdown in his working relationship with Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis and the club’s new global head of football Edu Gaspar.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano said Postecoglou was one of three candidates on the club’s short list to replace Nuno. The owner and Postecoglou share a connection through their Greek heritage.

“I have always had a very good relationship with the owner, last season was very, very close, almost on a daily basis,” Nuno told a press conference last month. “This season, not so well.”

The Athletic reported later on August 22 that there was a potentially irreparable rift between Nuno and Edu, newly-appointed as global head of football at the start of July following his exit from Arsenal last November.

Nuno was named Forest head coach in December 2023 and led the club to qualification for Europe during his first full season in charge. Forest finished seventh in the Premier League during the 2024-25 campaign, having spent significant time in third position.

Forest have four points in three games so far this season, most recently losing 3-0 to West Ham.

Postecoglou, like Nuno, is a former manager of Tottenham. The Australian was sacked by the club after a woeful league campaign last season, even though he delivered the Europa League – Europe’s second-tier trophy behind the Champions League.
