Mark Nawaqanitawase could be back in Wallabies colours for the 2027 World Cup after delaying contract negotiations until the end of the NRL season.

The Roosters had been keen to open talks with the in-form winger about a contract extension beyond the end of next season but Nawaqanitawase wants to wait until he’s completed his first full NRL campaign before finalising his future.

Nawaqanitawase has been a revelation on the wing for the Roosters, scoring 11 tries in 12 matches, including a double in last weekend’s rout of the Cowboys.

Rugby Australia is keen to get him back to the 15-player code in the lead-up to hosting the World Cup.

“Honestly, I’m just getting into my footy still,” Nawaqanitawase told the Sydney Morning Herald

“I’ve got to focus on my game given it is a new game I’m still learning. “The next 18 months are locked in, but I’m really not sure after that.

“That World Cup is there, and it is on home soil. That’s why I signed for two years in the first place and that is something I will have to consider.

“But I’ve got to say I’m loving the Roosters and loving rugby league, too. It will be a tough call, but it’s not one I need to make now.”

The Roosters offloaded fellow winger Dominic Young to Newcastle recently after Nawaqanitawase overtook him in their pecking order.

Dragons set sights on Selwyn

St George Illawarra are set to make moves to clear up salary cap space to sign Broncos star Selwyn Cobbo.

Tyrell Sloan will be allowed to leave early if he can secure a deal elsewhere after the fullback’s form has been below par since being switched to the wing this season following the arrival of Clint Gutherson.

The Dragons are hopeful of signing Cobbo before the June 30 deadline after he has fallen out of favour at Brisbane.

Cobbo has been playing in the Queensland Cup and has not lined up at NRL level since the Round 13 loss to Manly last month.

Brisbane are on the verge of re-signing fellow winger Josiah Karapani and after inking new deals for Kotoni Staggs, Adam Reynolds and Blake Mozer last week, Cobbo is considered surplus to requirements.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that the Dragons will offer Cobbo a contract until the end of 2026 so the six-time Maroons representative can revive his career in Wollongong.

Cobbo has scored 48 tries in 80 appearances for Brisbane since his debut in 2021 and the 23-year-old has long been considered a future superstar but has struggled to fulfil his potential.

Sloan was recently dropped by coach Shane Flanagan due to his ongoing defensive deficiencies.

The Steelers junior has scored nine tries in 11 appearances in 2025 but had trouble with his hands in their last-start loss to Cronulla, fumbling high kicks as the Dragons coughed up a 12-point lead.
