Brisbane coach Michael Maguire has ruled out making a play for Daly Cherry-Evans even if captain Adam Reynolds elected to retire at the end of the season.
The Broncos have Ben Hunt signed until the end of next year while fellow playmaker Ezra Mam is locked up until the end of 2029.
Maguire was asked about making a raid on the Manly captain if off-contract Reynolds decided to pull the pin and whether the Broncos could afford him.
“No, I’m focused on what we are doing here. I will leave that one alone,” Maguire said.
“Obviously there is plenty going on there … but our focus is what we are doing now with who we have got. That’s the key here.”
Pushed on whether there was any interest in exploring Cherry-Evans anyway, the coach was emphatic.
“No,” he said.
Brisbane’s position follows that of South Sydney, St George Illawarra, Wests Tigers and Penrith who have all ruled out a play for Cherry-Evans.
The Dolphins are known to be one keen party, while Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson is set to be quizzed about his interest on Thursday afternoon.
The Roosters already have James Tedesco and Reece Robson on their books for next year, with both part of the same management stable as Cherry-Evans.
Canterbury supremo Phil Gould and Gold Coast coach Des Hasler have each dodged questions on whether Cherry-Evans would be a target for them.
The Queensland State of Origin captain would have the potential to turn both the Roosters and Bulldogs into premiership heavyweights, given the players around him.

Cherry-Evans told Manly’s management in December that 2025 would be his last season playing for them, with club bosses claiming they expected him to either retire or head to England.
The 36-year-old announced on Monday he was leaning towards playing on in 2026, but said he had made his mind up that it would not be with the Sea Eagles.
Manly tabled a two-year deal worth $1.4 million on Tuesday morning, hours after Cherry-Evans said on national television he would knock back the offer.
The Sea Eagles are yet to receive a formal response from Cherry-Evans’ camp, but it appears extremely unlikely the club’s greatest ever halfback will change his stance and accept the deal.
