The debate over sports commentators not calling matches from the venue has ignited again with Nine under fire for its decision to call the Las Vegas NRL Round 1 double-header from their studios in Sydney.

Nine is sending Karl Stefanovic to the States to co-host the Today show in the lead-up to the matches at Allegiant Stadium on March 2 with journalist Danika Mason and former players Paul Gallen and Johnathan Thurston to work the sidelines during the game.

But Nine executives are under fire after deciding their commentators and play-by-play analysts will not be flown over to Vegas and will called the matches from their head office in North Sydney, according to a Daily Telegraph report.

Nine will only broadcast the second NRL match to kick off the season, Penrith’s 3.30pm meeting with Cronulla on March 2, with Canberra’s clash with the Warriors at 11am to be shown on Fox League.

ABC powerbrokers are also cutting costs by having their radio commentators call the Warriors vs Raiders and Sharks vs Panthers showdowns from their studios in Sydney.

“Remote commentary is a practice increasingly adopted by broadcasters globally, across every code of sport,” an ABC spokesperson said.

“Advances in broadcasting technology allow us to maintain the immediacy and quality our listeners expect, while ensuring we remain vigilant with public resources.”

The ABC spokesperson claimed the national broadcaster had increased its schedule of live sport in their “audio network” over the past year.

In recent years the topic of commentators calling matches off footage from studios instead of live from matches has become a sore point for fans.
