Sam Cane might have played his final Test after being ruled out of Sunday’s clash with France after suffering a shocking head gash in the win over Ireland.
The All Blacks have brought in three additional All Blacks XV players as injury cover.
Cane has been ruled out due to Head Injury Assessment (HIA) protocols and All Blacks XV captain Du’Plessis Kirifi has come in.
Dashing winger Mark Tele’a is also out for the France Test, after scans confirmed he sustained a hand injury during the win over Ireland.
Chay Fihaki has travelled from Montpellier to Paris as backs cover.
Lock Fabian Holland has also joined the All Blacks camp, following Sam Darry’s season-ending MCL injury.
AJ Lam replaced Harry Plummer (minor leg injury) last week, as cover for Billy Proctor.
Cane, who is in his final campaign with the All Blacks needed significant stitching done to a head wound on the weekend.
“The doctor had a hell of a job, it was a genuine deep cut,” All Blacks coach Scott Robertson said.
There will be one more chance for a Cane farewell Test – against Italy on Novermber 24.
“It’s next man in though, we back our squad and we’ve got no doubt that whoever comes in will do a great job,” All Blacks forwards coach Jason Ryan said.
“But Sam has been immense, he’s been exceptional, really, on the field. But he’ll lead in a different way next week.”
Ryan added that Beauden Barrett and hooker Codie Taylor are expected to return from their head knocks against France.
“I think the front row selections are the toughest I’ve ever had in my coaching career with the competition that’s out there,” Ryan said.
“That’s a credit to all the boys, I’m not going to name names, but they’re all working extremely hard and it makes for some tough conversations the next couple of days.”
