Jose Mourinho was sent off during his reunion with former club Manchester United, as his Fenerbahce side drew 1-1 in their Europa League clash on Friday.
Mourinho was shown a red card in the second half after a heated dispute with referee Clement Turpin after the Frenchman waved away for a penalty against Manuel Ugarte.
The colourful Mourinho initially told reporters he didn’t want to speak about the incident, before wading on on Turpin’s performance.
A new era of the UEFA Champions League is here, only on Stan Sport.
“He told us something incredible,” Mourinho told TNT Sports. “He told that at the same time he could see the action in the box and my behavior on the touchline.
“I congratulate him because he is absolutely incredible, his peripheral vision. During the game, 100mph, he had one eye on the penalty situation and he had one eye on the bench and my behaviour. So that’s the explanation he gave me. That’s why he’s one of the best referees in the world.”
Manchester United went ahead through Christian Eriksen’s 15th-minute goal with Youssef En-Nesyri grabbing the equaliser in the 49th, heading home unmarked from close range on a cross from Allan Saint-Maximin.
The result keeps Fenerbahce unbeaten with five points from three games but Mourinho said his team deserved more.
“I think it would be fair to say that we did an extraordinary match and we were better than them, so good result for Man United,” he said.
“My boys played an amazing match. We played against a team that is at a superior level to us. We finished the game with a centre-back playing at right-back and a right-back at left-back. We had to do a crazy puzzle but our performance was extraordinary and I couldn’t ask for anything more from the players.”
Mourinho led United to win the Europa League in 2017 during his time at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils have made a stumbling start to the new-look competition, with a shock home draw with FC Twente followed by an added-time goal saving them from defeat in Porto.
In London, Richarlison marked his first start of the season with a second-half winner to help Tottenham edge past AZ Alkmaar and earn a third consecutive win in Europe.
The Brazil international chipped home from the penalty spot in the 53rd minute, which ensured he avoided a post-match dressing down after he initially would not give the ball to stand-in captain James Maddison.
Maddison prepared to take the penalty before handing it back to Richarlison, who converted the chance.
Maddison explained the lead up to Richarlison’s goal.
“Initially we both wanted to take it,” he said. “I’m a senior player and captain today, I was going to take the penalty and then when I was stood there I had a little conversation with myself and thought ‘Richy’s just come back from an injury, it can be difficult for a striker’.
“So a split second decision to let him take it and that’ll do him the world of good.”
Ange Postecoglou made nine changes from the 4-1 win over West Ham United in the Premier League, but it didn’t stop Spurs from clinching a seventh win from eight games.
The Aussie coach was quizzed about the penalty incident.
“As long as they score, it doesn’t really bother me,” he said. “I thought Madders was outstanding today. He was captain tonight, he was so creative, caused them problems. I think he sensed in that moment Richy’s worked awfully hard and he’s kind of got his season started tonight.
“Goals are important for strikers, so I thought Madders made a great decision to give him the responsibility but Richy had to put it in the back of the net and he did that.”
Speaking to TNT Sports about the penalty incident, Postecoglou added: “As long as they score mate, I couldn’t care less.”
Elsewhere on Thursday night, Glasgow Rangers enjoyed a 4-0 triumph at home over FCSB of Romania and Ajax Amsterdam beat Qarabag 3-0, who finished with nine men, in Baku.
Lazio were 2-0 winners over Twente in the Netherlands, while Eintracht Frankfurt, the 2022 Europa League winners, got a late goal from substitute Hugo Larsson to edge Latvia’s RFS 1-0.
Olympiacos, last season’s Conference League champions, saw off Malmo 1-0 in Sweden.
Another Greek side PAOK came from two goals down to salvage a 2-2 draw with Czech side Viktoria Plzen in Thessaloniki and Real Sociedad won 2-1 away to Israel’s Maccabi Tel-Aviv in Belgrade, Serbia, due to the regional conflict.
Besiktas, Ferencvaros, Athletic Bilbao and Roma all won by the same 1-0 scoreline.
