Australia’s selectors face the dilemma of whether to stick with Cameron Green as a specialist batter with the star all-rounder unlikely to be able to bowl due to his back injury.
After suffering a back problem which forced him out of the final stages of their recent white-ball tour to England, he reportedly will be available for selection in the five-Test home series against India according to The Age.
Green is sitting out this week’s Sheffield Shield opener against Queensland and is considered unlikely to play in round two but is still hopeful of getting a start in next month’s first Test in Perth as a batter.
The first Test is set for Perth on November 22, following three ODIs and three T20Is against Pakistan earlier in the month.
If Green plays as a specialist batter, Mitchell Marsh will be called on to do more bowling.
Green’s injury is of particular concern because, as he was making his way as a young player in the domestic professional game, he was beset by a series of back stress fractures.
He flew back to Perth last month after suffering the problem following the third ODI defeat at Chester-le-Street against England.
A team spokesperson said: “Green reported soreness following the third ODI. He will return home for further assessment where his return-to-play management plan will be determined.”
Green had looked in good nick during the England series, having scored 42 and taken 2-45 in Australia’s third ODI, while previously having been the visitors’ top wicket-taker in the T20I series win in Scotland.
There is talk that Steve Smith is keen to return to the No.4 spot after a modest stint as opener so the selectors could jettison Green and bring in a specialist at the top.
Cameron Bancroft harmed his chances of a recall with a golden duck on Tuesday but Marcus Harris scored a ton for Victoria. Queenslander Matt Renshaw is also in the mix.
