Hawthorn forward Jack Ginnivan has admitted he’s ‘just got to grow up’ in the wake of his cheeky Instagram taunt ahead of the Hawks’ semi final loss to Port Adelaide.

Ginnivan infamously stirred the pot by writing ‘see u in 14 days’ on former Collingwood teammate and now Sydney ruckman Brodie Grundy’s Instagram post, which escalated immediately following the Hawks’ three-point defeat when Power coach Ken Hinkley publicly hit back at the 21-year old, sparking a war of words with James Sicily.

Hinkley was fined $20,000 by the AFL for his role in the stoush, while 7News.com.au have reported Sicily told the coach that the Power had been a ‘nowhere club for eight years’.

Speaking to Seven while preparing for the Brownlow Medal, Ginnivan praised Hawks leaders and the hierarchy for backing him in.

“Upon reflection, probably not the smartest idea, but the leaders and the coach had my full support and they backed me in,” he said.

“I’ve just got to grow up, I guess, and be a bit smarter.”

Ginnivan has caused controversy in each of his past two finals series, famously heading to the Moonee Valley Racecourse on grand final eve while at Collingwood last year, before a trip to a Richmond pub with mates the night before the Hawks’ elimination final win over the Western Bulldogs.

McGovern claims maiden Eagles B&F

West Coast veteran Jeremy McGovern has broken through for his first Eagles best and fairest award.

The 32-year old, who was one of two Eagles All-Australians despite another disappointing year for the club in which they finished 16th on the ladder, finished with 184 votes, seven clear of midfielder Elliot Yeo (177), while All-Australian and leading goalkicker Jake Waterman (155) came in third.

A five-time All-Australian, McGovern has been one of the AFL’s leading intercept defenders for almost a decade, had previously finished second in the John Worsfold Medal in 2017.

Having struggled with injuries in recent seasons, he and Yeo, along with key back Harry Edwards, travelled to Qatar in the off-season to receive treatment from a high-profile sports physiotherapist, with the decision vindicated by McGovern featuring in 19 of 23 games for the home-and-away season – his highest since 2019.

Young star Harley Reid capped an outstanding maiden season to finish ninth in the award, as well as win the Eagles’ best emerging talent award.
