Australia’s B-Girl Raygun’s “kangaroo” routine went viral at the women’s breaking event at the Paris Olympics while Afghan competitor Manizha Talash staged the first protest of the Games by displaying “Free Afghan Women” on her cape during her performance.

Talesh is competing as a member of the refugee Olympic team unveiled the light blue cape with the protest phrase during her loss to Dutch rival India Sardjoe in the qualifying stage.

All political statements are banned during the Olympics so she may face sanctions for her protest against the Taliban rule in her homeland which has imposed strict limitations on women and girls.

Talesh is one of 37 athletes representing a team of refugees in Paris across 12 sports.

Afghanistan has a small team of three women and three men at the Games and the head and secretary of its Olympic committee are in exile.

The IOC has stated that no Taliban official has received accreditation for ths Olympics.

In a much more light-hearted moment, Australian 36-year-old Rachel Gunn’s dance moves went viral on social media after her routine featured a kangaroo hop.

A lecturer at Sydney’s Macquarie University with a PhD in cultural studies, she did not win any of her battles during the round robin phase.

Breaking was a controversial choice to make its debut in Paris and has been omitted from the list of sports for the LA Games in 2028.

“It was disappointing it was decided that it wouldn’t be in LA, particularly before we even had a chance to show it,” said Gunn.

“I think that was possibly a little premature. I wonder if they’re kicking themselves now.

“I am super excited to be part of bringing breaking to the world. It is such a phenomenal atmosphere here. It is such an amazing experience, and it is a privilege to get this opportunity.

“All my moves are original,” she added after the judges didn’t show her much love. Creativity is really important to me. I go out there and I show my artistry.

“Sometimes it speaks to the judges, and sometimes it doesn’t. I do my thing, and it represents art. That is what it is about.”
