South Sydney powerbrokers have given under-fire coach Jason Demetriou a reprieve, despite reports he was coaching for his future ahead of the Rabbitohs’ loss to the Sharks.

The embattled powerhouse sits last on the NRL ladder with a 1-5 record, but an honourable 22-34 loss to Cronulla with a mounting injury toll was enough to earn Demetriou a stay of execution.

With the Rabbitohs heading into a bye ahead of crunch games against the Storm and Panthers, his job is still far from secure, especially amid revelations from Fox League Australia coach Mal Meninga has been identified as the top candidate to replace him were a call to be made.

However, Meninga maintains no official approach has been made to him, while stating he would not be willing to part with the national job to take up the Rabbitohs’ position and expressing concerns over several ‘red flags’ in their treatment of Demetriou.

“If no one’s willing to step up and talk on behalf of the club and (say) exactly what’s happening, particularly with Jason… that to me is a sign that you maybe shouldn’t get involved with the club,” Meninga said.

“I haven’t been approached and all of a sudden my name is associated with the story. That sends some poor signals from somewhere. Is it the board or whatever?

“If it comes to that Kangaroos duties are first and foremost in my mind… I want to go to a third World Cup.

“So if it’s going to impinge on me coaching the Australian side, it’s a big fat no from me.”
