North Melbourne have confirmed Tarryn Thomas has once again been stood down by the club, after the 22-year old failed to make significant progress in his ongoing respectful behaviour training.

Further allegations of Thomas’ treatment of women emerged during the week in the form of inappropriate text messages, after the talented forward was accused of physical violence against a number of women during the off-season.

Thomas had only recently returned to training with the Kangaroos, as well as appearing in a VFL practice match. However, he has now been barred from selection at any level as he continues his respectful behaviour training.

“Thomas’ failure to meet expectations around his education program means the club will now create a new plan to address his issues of accountability, remorse and behaviour change,” a club statement released on Friday morning reads.

Kangaroos general manager of football Todd Viney said on Friday Thomas ‘still has some work to do’ in the program before resuming his AFL career, but said the new allegations against him weren’t the sole reason for his being stood down.

“There has been some improvement, but still not enough from our observations and also some of the providers of those services that [we] had been dealing with,” Viney said.

“In our view he was not available for selection.

“The new allegations… while we get to the bottom of those allegations and work out the next part of his program, he will stay away from the club until we’re clear on what that looks like.

“We need to see significant improvement in this behaviour. In this industry, it’s a really tough industry, you behave yourself in, or you behave yourself out.

“The main part we want to get right [of Thomas’ behavioural training] is respect and responsibility to women.”

However, speaking alongside Viney, coach Alastair Clarkson preferred to concentrate on the Kangaroos’ Saturday night clash with Fremantle.

“Let’s just talk about Fremantle, eh?” Clarkson said.

“He’s [Viney] answered ten questions, I’ve answered six. We’ve got a game of footy to play, and 23 players are trying to do that as best they can.

“We can’t deal with any of that until we know all the detail of it; Todd’s outlined that pretty clearly to you guys, and all we can do is what we can control, and that’s going to play a game of football against Fremantle this week.”

Thomas will appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court next week on a charge of threatening to distribute an intimate image.

‘He’s had two shockers’: Coaching great blasts Dangerfield

Coaching great Mick Malthouse has suggested Patrick Dangerfield’s new role as Geelong captain has compromised his effectiveness as a player, after the Cats slumped to a second straight loss to start the 2023 season.

Dangerfield amassed 22 disposals but was well down on his usual output in the Cats’ eight-point loss to Carlton on Thursday night, following on from a quiet outing in their Round 1 defeat at the hands of Collingwood.

Speaking on ABC Grandstand at three-quarter time of their loss to the Blues, Malthouse was scathing of the champion’s performance.

“He’s had two shockers,” Malthouse said of the 32-year old’s start to the season.

“Last week he didn’t play [well], this week he’s really struggled.

“I don‘t know if it’s the expectations or leadership. He just doesn’t look like the same dynamic player.”

Dangerfield took over the captaincy from retiring Cats great Joel Selwood, who led the team to the 2022 premiership and spent 11 years at the helm.

His start in the top job hasn’t been easy, with the Cats becoming the first reigning premier since Hawthorn in 2009 to lose the first two matches of their title defence. It’s also the first time Geelong have started a year 0-2 since 2015, the last time they failed to make finals.

However, coach Chris Scott isn’t pressing the panic button yet, saying he expected early-season jitters and maintained the Cats still have a ‘quiet confidence’ of a second consecutive flag.

“We’ve come into this year with a view that we are going to be different,” Scott said after the match.

“There are going to be some teething problems with a few things, and we’ve lost a couple of close games, but there’s still a lot to like.

“There’s a quiet confidence about us. I guess we do have extra confidence with our more experienced players that if we do get it right, that our top level is going to be hard to beat.

“We’re not quite there yet, we’ll work on it, but I’m probably erring more on the positive side.”

With games against Gold Coast, Hawthorn and West Coast in the next three rounds, the Cats are widely expected to rebound quickly from their sluggish start.

‘Can’t do both jobs’: Tigers explain Daisy Pearce snub

Richmond figurehead Neil Balme has explained why the Tigers refused to allow Channel 7 commentator and AFLW icon Daisy Pearce into their changerooms following their Round 1 draw with Carlton.

Speaking on SEN Afternoons, Balme said the Tigers were concerned Pearce, who is working as an assistant coach at Geelong in addition to her TV duties after retiring from the AFLW at the end of last season, could be exposed to gameplan secrets.

“You don’t really want assistant coaches from other clubs hanging around rooms after games to see what they can find out,” Balme said on Thursday.

“I know I’d trust her to the point that it’s not what she is there for. But you can’t do both jobs, so I think it’s reasonable of us to say that.

“It’s certainly not personal… she could figure something out, she’s got a lovely footy mind.

“Geelong are really lucky to have her but to be able to do both jobs is a bit difficult at times.”

According to SEN, several other clubs have also expressed a reluctance to allow Pearce into the changerooms this season, though Carlton gave permission on Thursday night.
