Error-prone cricket umpire Joel Wilson has been dumped from the ICC panel – a move that is sure to be welcomed by Australia’s elite players.

Wilson was thought to be behind the recent decision to report Matt Kuhnemann’s bowling action, and had a difficult time in the centre during India’s summer tour of Australia.

He was also the umpire who gave Ben Stokes not out to a ball from Nathan Lyon that appeared to be crashing into the stumps. The Aussies had already burned their reviews so Wilson’s howler stood and the Test was lost.

After Kuhnemann was cleared, his mentor John Davison told Nine he blamed Wilson: “I would be encouraging Joel Wilson to get his decisions right rather than get involved in other parts of the game.”

Wilson, who has officiated in 67 Tests, had 35.4 per cent of his decisions overturned on reviewed last year.

Also cut from the panel was Englishman Michael Gough.

His overturn percentage for 2024 was 21.7% and he was well regarded.

Former England 50-over player Alex Wharf and former South African domestic player Allahuddien Parker have been promoted to the panel.

ICC chair Jay Shah welcomed the new members of the elite panel: “Being an elite official brings with it scrutiny and pressure, but we are confident that both Allahuddien and Alex possess the temperament, experience and skill to deliver consistently at this very top level.”
